Reflection - Lesson 4
In this lesson, Daniel showed us a lot of learning objects, some are simple (like y=ax+b) and some are complex (like simulation). I agreed that whatever you do, the planning is most important part, because it combined your creative ideas and philosophies behind. A simple theory need to explain in thousand of words, but can be expressed in a small screen. Because visual is much easy to understand than "word by word", so learning objects become important in our education.
BTW, as I am not a teacher, I don't know the reality in the school. Learning through using learning objects should help our children to absorb knowledge more easily, however, I think it is also helpful if they can learn through designing simple learning objects, i.e. the children to do simple task like us, it is an interesting way to facilitate their investigation of knowledge.

Excellent point Christina. In fact, there are to sides of learning objects for learning: learning objects can be given to students together with some task (e.g., inquiry) so that they can manipulate it, explore, subtracts some information and examine it in search for understanding. Other way is to ask students to design representation of their own knowledge. The software tools that they use in this process we call “Cognitive Tools” or “Mind Tools.” You can search internet and there is a lot of writing about cognitive tools. All these strategies (learning with learning object, learning by designing with cognitive tools) are powerful strategy to improve learning in our classroom, however, a lot of teachers are resisting. The reason for this are interesting to debate, but my suspicion is that this is because these challenge traditional assumptions about teaching and learning, something that from my own experience is in particularly strong in Hong Kong.

Actually, as a Hong Kong student, we are the product of Hong Kong Education System, we were lacking of training of cognitive and critical thinking. As my past experience, I just absorbed what teachers taught, and didn't ask why. So, I think "single direction teaching" become the habit and hard to change in Hong Kong.

So, can you in any way help to support teachers in your insitution to promote training of cognitive and critical thinking for their students?

As I am working in the University, I think students should have the ability to think critically. And also, I think most of faculty members transfer their knowledge to their students like us. Faculty members introduced the theories and concepts to the students, students need to investigate through discussion and coursework.
As university library, we tried to provide the best environment, according to the curriculum needs, for the students to do the investigation. We have materials like, bibliographies, periodicals, and etc. On the other hand, we have experience library staffs to provide guidance to help them during investigation.
Recently, many university libraries in Hong Kong tried to develop the learning centre, so that students can do the whole production of their coursework within the library. The learning center will provide all the equipments, like PCs, video production studio, software...etc, and also the instructors, to help them solving most of the technical problem.
I think it is very useful because the students do not need to stick in the technical issue, and they can concentrate to their "ideas".
The best environment we provided to the students are only tools, however, students need to think more about what they exactly needed. Most like, they cannot have the exact answer when they ask the first question. That's why we continuously ask them questions, because we want them think deeply and understand what they are really needed.
